The Comic Industry Embraces Twitter - Do You?

The Internet has gone Twitter-crazy, and the comic industry is taking notice in a big way.

Twitter is a form of micro-blogging. It allows users to keep people from their network in the loop by allowing them to post, in 140 characters or less, the answer to the simple question "What are you doing?". Some users have described it as similar to Facebook status updates. Your post, or "tweet" can contain links to websites, pictures, and video.  This has made Twitter an invaluable resource for information from news sources, blogs, individuals, businesses, and of course, the comic industry.

Depending on who or what you choose to follow on Twitter, it can be your best friend when it comes to following what's going on in comics. Most of the major publishers are on board, so you can count on them to provide exciting news and release info.

If you're a fan of Marvel, you will appreciate the info being offered up by Agent M, Joe Quesada, and Brian Michael Bendis to name a few. Bendis and Quesada are notorius for dishing gossip and info about upcoming Marvel projects such as the Thor feature film, and the Superhero Squad animated show.

DC is on board as well, but in a more reserved way. They seem to have not embraced Twitter to the extent that Marvel has. Users can follow DC Nation for updates. I would definitely like to see more updates from the likes of Dan DiDio and others. DC needs to do a better job at engaging its fans.

Other publishers that are on Twitter include: Dark Horse, Devils Due, IDW, Oni, and many more.

You can also get your fix of breaking news on Twitter feeds from the likes of Newsarama, Comic Book Resources, and iFanboy. Following sites such as these on Twitter allows you to receive links to real-time breaking news and interesting columns without having to visit each individual site.

If you have a favourite writer or artist and you are looking for insight into their creative minds, then look no further than Twitter. Warren Ellis is one of the more humorous and engaging folks you will ever follow on Twitter. Neil Gaiman "tweeted" all kinds of interesting information while on his recent press tour prior to the release of Coraline. Even Jim Lee has begun to get into the act - tweeting live from a recent convention, Jim gave away free sketches to the first person who approached him with a secret phrase given out over his twitter feed.

For those looking to break into the comic industry, perhaps no one has provided more insight into the minds of editors than Marvel artist/editor/talent scout C.B. Cebulski. Often brutally honest and hilarious at the same time, C.B.'s tweets about getting into comics are a must-read for any budding artist or writer.

And if you happen to be a fan of independant publishers and creators, you will find many of them have embraced Twitter as well.

Twitter has also given comic fans the opportunity to interact with each other. Take a look at conversations had around the Watchmen movie recently. All types of opinions and viewpoints can be found on Twitter.

So to sum it up, if you are into comics and need your regular information fix, try Twitter. Need help determining who you should follow once you're account is set up? Look no further than this handy list put together by the folks at iFanboy.com recently. It contains links to artists, writers, publishers, and other persons of interest within the comic industry.

Have fun, and happy tweeting!
